Andrew Hugelier

Andrew Hugelier – Fine Art – Portrait, Illustration

Andrew Hugelier’s work is often painted in a narrative style where subjects seem driven by symbols that surround and enter their forms.

As Hugelier says in his artist’s biography, “I find great pleasure in simplifying complicated scenes into their best geometric forms… [and]… in the investigation of concepts most closely relating to the internal workings of the human mind and soul.”

Indeed, in [muddle], a subverted storyline about this figure is taking place. The shifting glace and vague features of the seated figure are informed by the art nouveau shape inside his form and the curvilinear map painted on top of him. Hugelier also blurs the background with intentional brushstrokes, drawing more attention to the simple and elusive shapes. These shapes, as Hugelier suggests, illumine the intention of this character and perhaps give us a clue to his motive. The joy in Hugelier’s work is the way a viewer can read these symbols to piece together a multitude of stories about human behavior. –E.I.

Amanda Coggin

Amanda Coggin – Photography - Portrait, Landscape, Abstract

Amanda Coggin is certainly well traveled. Her large collection of color photographs capture images of places all over the globe, including India, Burma, Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, London and Southern California.

One of Coggin’s greatest loves is photographing the people and cultures of those far away lands. As she puts it, “My most joyous moments are when I’m photographing people. Having worked with diverse human beings around the world, I find that when focused upon, their true spirit comes to light.”

That spirit is contained in Thai Boats at Ko Tao, an image that is at once peaceful, beautifully powerful, and speaks of daily life in the Thai village where Coggin has journeyed, camera in tow. The sense of freedom and joy in her voyages around the world are exuded in her colorful portraits, and are enough to take the viewer far away from the ordinary. –E.I.
